You really do try to watch your diet. You avoid junk food, practice portion control, and even exercise several times a week. But you are increasingly frustrated with not losing weight.

Well, you’re not alone. This is a very common problem. Studies show that 95% of dieters fail to lose weight and keep it off. That’s very discouraging. After trying over and over again, many simply give up. This doesn’t have to happen to you. By understanding some of the common causes of diet failures, you can successfully lose weight, and keep it off.

1) The lack of support from the people around you can be very discouraging at times. Some people seem to be able to eat whatever they want without gaining weight. People eat junk food in front of you, at work and at home. They don’t understand your struggle. Ask them to help by not eating the junk or snack food when you are around.

Your surroundings sabotage your efforts. You are exposed to fast food and coffee shops, huge restaurant meals, snack machines filled with junk food, and advertisements everywhere. As much as possible, you must take charge of your environment. Stay away from places where you are tempted. Read nutrition facts on packages to learn the correct food portion sizes. Always carry a healthy snack (an apple or raisins, a few nuts, etc. A portion plate can help you reduce your food consumption.

2) Most diets have rigid rules and requirements, and are hard to adapt to your lifestyle, habits and body’s specific needs. They require the same rules and same program for everyone, regardless. You can improve your chance of success by working out a personalized program. A doctor or nutritionist can help. You can find one locally, or through the Internet. A dietician can act as your coach or trainer, helping you stay on track. They can set up a specific, individualized diet plan.

3) Many common foods contain hidden calories. Even foods you think are healthy; for example, fruit juices and many “low-fat” products still have a lot of calories. Most people don’t realize that a frappuccino coffee might have up to 600 calories! Keep an eye on these hidden sources of calories that may be sabotaging your diet.

4) You must not give up, because that will surely result in diet failure. If you want to make progress in your diet, limit your ‘cheating’ and try not to become discouraged when you hit a temporary plateau. Don’t look for quick weight loss. It is much healthier to lose weight gradually. And it takes time. It’s important not to give up prematurely.

5) Too many people lose weight and then gain it all back again when they return to their former eating habits. Don’t let that happen to you. Being successful at losing weight and keeping it off requires that you change your lifestyle and attitude. It will be necessary to break your old habits, and develop new eating behaviors. Find a diet program that works for you. A portion control plate can not only help you lose weight, but can be used to help keep the weight off.

Success depends on finding the right diet plan for you. According to nutritionists and dieticians, there are several important factors involved in losing and maintaining your weight. If you choose the right foods, limit calories using food portion control, increase your exercise and activity level, and don’t give up, you CAN be successful and achieve a healthy weight for life.
